                                   Why Meditate?
 
Meditation is a medicine…a medicine for the mind.
 
It seems that the mind is hyperactive, all revved up. It needs a sedative.
 
Our minds basically all function in the same manner, given the differences for our stories, our filters, and our perceptions. Basically, they either are in the past or they are in the future. What kinds of things might they be reviewing in the past? Often they are mulling over some hurt or anger or perhaps agonizing over some personal shortcoming. Maybe they are wishing for different outcomes, creating feelings of regret. At times, although perhaps much more rarely, they remember some good times. And what of the future? What might they be doing there? Worrying and creating feelings of fear or anxiety? Planning revenge? Trying to come up with some creative damage control or effective maneuver? And hopefully, on occasion, creating a vision of a better self, a better world, a better anything!
 
For those of us that have had the good fortune to have watched “What the Bleep do we Know” and/or “The Secret”, we probably spend a fair amount of mental energy on a positive creation for the future and that is great!   However well it works for us, bear in mind that nine-tenths of what is happening in the mind happens in the unconscious. So if we have unconscious programs of unworthiness or beliefs systems that keep us small or pigeon holed into some conditioned role, then our one-tenth conscious effort will get diluted. And yet, mysteriously enough, when our soul cuts through all the mind stuff, things can seem to manifest quickly and easily. Bearing witness to the song “You can’t always get what you want, but you’ll get what you need”
 
So as wonderful as our minds are or can be, they still seem to run us, to rule us, to master us! How can a tool, an amazing tool, be our boss? How come when we ask it to just stop and be quiet for two seconds it just keeps on trucking? How come we get lost in fears and worries that never actually come to fruition? How much time do we spend lost in anger and thoughts of unwarranted victim hood? How much time do we spend lost in the mind and in our mind games and amusements? Mind games and amusements can be many and varied. Many, we may argue and positive and helpful and good! No argument! But the question is, how much of our day do we spend there?   My guess is -- pretty much all of it! 
 
That is why we need the medicine for the mind…meditation.
 
Meditation is simply allowing the space, the time and the venue To Be rather than To Think. It is odd to me how many people say, “What is the point of that?”  Realize, if You did not Be, then You would not Think! So getting in touch with the True Self, the Original Self, would seem to be a good idea. Can you picture yourself living in a small corner of your house and steadfastly refusing to explore the rest of it? 
 
Do you realize that probably 95% of the mental stuff going on in the head is not even original thought? We got it from our process of conditioning. We got it from someone else who got it from someone else?   So why do we cling to this stuff? How important could it be?
 
There are so many methods of meditation, but the purpose of meditation is to take the fuel source away from the freight train of the mind and let it begin to slow down, and, in time, eventually stop. It can start again upon your command, but with a difference. You will be the master and the mind will be your servant. Once the medicine has done its work, drop it. 
 
Consciousness, Awareness, lives only in the present. It does not live in the past or the future - it has no reference for that - as time is a construct of the mind. In fact, the mind and consciousness can never meet. So meditation is the medicine that helps the mind to become still, so that consciousness can arise and be restored to its rightful place of mastery. It is already there within you, it is the truth of who you are, we just need a break from all that mental stuff so that it can make its appearance.
