About the Founder
Dr. Ida P. Rolf was the founder of Structural Integration. In 1920 she earned her PhD. in biochemistry from the College of Physicians and
Surgeons of Columbia University. For twelve years she worked at the Rockefeller Institute in the Chemotherapy and Organic Chemistry
departments. In the 1930's, challenged by a friend's disabilities and dissatisfied with the available medical treatments, Dr. Rolf explored
Osteopathy, Chiropractic medicine, Tantric Yoga, the Alexander Technique, Homeopathic medicine and Korzybski's work on the
consciousness. By the 1940's she had developed and experienced many breakthroughs with the work she did on chronically disabled persons
unable to find help elsewhere. During her scientific research, she made a fundamental discovery about the body: the same network of
connective tissue which contains and links the muscle system when it's healthy can be used to reshape it when it's been pulled out of the
proper order. Dr. Rolf further refined her technique and developed a training program to insure that this important work would continue.
Graduates are required to have extensive knowledge of anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, body awareness and a mature sensitivity to
psychological mediation. She called the ten session protocol, Structural Integration, which is descriptive of the process. Structural Integration
is also known as Rolfing. Rolfing was a nickname, first coined at the Esalen Institute in Big Sur.
What does gravity have to do with me?
Gravity is defined as the pull on all bodies toward the center of the earth. The earth's gravitational field is the most potent physical force that
the human body has to deal with. Although most people realize this force exists, they don't think much about it. Gravity's constant effect on
any soft, pliable mass is to make it a formless, chaotic spherical unit. Since the body has a great deal of plasticity and is much broader at the
top than at the base, it is greatly affected by gravity when imbalances exist. The simplest understanding of the force of gravity on a misaligned
body of structure is to picture the Leaning Tower of Pisa. If we can help you become the Empire State Building, then you tend to remain that
way.
Most bodies are in a state of imbalance. As we grow older, we often "shrink" in height and slowly lose flexibility. Our bones stay the same
length and our muscles can still function, but the connective tissue is what changes the most.
What is connective tissue?
Connective tissue is the support system of our body. It is a very tough, strong tissue, and is pervasive throughout the body. The simplest
example of connective tissue (fascia) is the thin, gray, stretchy tissue in between the skin and meat of a chicken breast. This is called the
subcutaneous fascia. Actually, there is so much connective tissue in the body, that if you were to take a cross section of your leg, for instance,
and remove everything that was not connective tissue, what would be left would look very much like a loofah. It actually forms the shape of
your body. One reason Dr. Rolf's method gets such amazing results is that she had a new and different model of the body. Instead of looking
at it as a skeletal system with muscles, nerve and blood vessels hung on it, she saw a sea of connective tissue with the skeletal system as
struts or spacers within it. All of the major systems in the body - circulatory, digestive, nervous, musculo-skeletal, and organs - are sheathed in
connective tissue. When the connective tissue system is healthy and balanced, it is flexible, elastic, long, and resilient. The tissue absorbs and
responds to gravitational force, illness, injury, emotional trauma and plain everyday stress. Any of these factors will immediately, or over time,
cause an imbalance in the tissue system. When imbalance exists, the system's healthy characteristics are affected. The imbalance is
identified as a shortening, thickening, dehydration of the tissue which impairs joint mobility and muscle function. This is usually felt in the body
as chronic pain, discomfort, stiffness, or decreased flexibility and impaired movement.
Does connective tissue have memory?
Any imbalance in the body - no matter what the cause - is imprinted as change in the internal structure and has a long-range and cumulative
effect. The body may attempt to return to its original state, but without assistance it remains misaligned. If you sprain an ankle, it is only natural
to protect it by keeping as much weight as possible off the injury. This natural response to the injury changes the entire body's relationship to
the gravitational field, and the neuromuscular system is re patterned as part of this compensation process. The patterns of neural activity,
blood and lymph flow, and muscular contraction are altered. After you are healed you may assume that you return to normal function, however
this is not the case. The pattern has been recorded and remnants of the injury will be maintained in the structure indefinitely. This change in
the inner system can take place from something as simple as the habit of carrying a heavy bag on the same shoulder or holding the telephone
receiver between one's shoulder and ear. When a muscle is chronically shortened it loses its ability to relax and the body will respond to that
tension. When these changes and patterns occur, the connective tissue needs assistance in order to return to its normal, healthy state.
Structural Integration is of great benefit at this point.
"If you can imagine how it feels to
have a fluid, light, balanced body,
free of pain, stiffness and chronic
stress, at ease with itself and the
earth's gravitational field, then you
will understand the goals of
Structural Integration."

"Athletes, dancers, students of
yoga and meditation, musicians,
business people, people riddled
people from all walks of life and all
ages, come to Structural Integration
not only for relief from their pain
and stress, but also for improved
performance in their professions
and daily activities."
Dr. Ida P. Rolf
Dr. Oz brought Rolfing onto the Oprah Show, where he explained how
Rolfing is the best thing you could do for muscle pain. He said "it's even
deeper than a deep-tissue massage; it targets bound up connective
tissues, literally releasing the joints."

When a co-worker first recommended Rolfing to me, I was
skeptical because for years, and had tried almost everything. I
decided to try it, after all I really had nothing to loose. I became a
believer even after my first session; it was like this was finally the
answer. I immediately started to feel better, my back hurt less and I
felt more energized and happy. My husband noticed right away the
changes; he could actually see my back getting better. After all ten
sessions it was amazing, I felt completely pain free, the results
were phenomenal. I not only could feel the difference but I could
see the difference, and so could everyone around me. I would
highly recommend Rolfing for anyone who feels pain and has tried
everything else. It is so simple and made worlds of difference for
me, I just wish someone would have told me about this years ago.

How does Dr. Rolf's Method of Structural Integration work?
By lengthening and opening the patterns in the connective tissue, thickened, toughened tissue becomes softer, more hydrated, and more
pliable, thus allowing movement and flexibility. It changes the body's compensations because it organizes the imbalances in the tissue. The
systematic approach to relating gravity through the myofascial layers aligns the body and improves posture. The body lengthens allowing
muscles the space to work and the joints the freedom to function. Structural Integration is correctional work that re-aligns your skeletal system
and extends and balances your soft tissue. Through this re-alignment, you gain a better relationship with the gravitational field around you.
You stand straighter, naturally. Your energy flows better and you feel great! One of the great benefits, is that you feel a change every
session!
What are the benefits?
* Feel a lightness in the body as it comes into alignment.
* Experience more energy and vitality.
* Enjoy relief from chronic body pain as deep tension and tightness are set free.
* Experience a more flexible body and greater range of motion.
* Realize improved athletic ability.
Structural Integration is a very personal process. It is important to remember that because no two people are alike, their experience and their
benefits will never be exactly the same. Some clients actually gain from 1/4" to over 1 inch in height, often appearing taller and slimmer.
Feelings of discomfort and pain are often alleviated. Others report greater flexibility, better balance, increased breathing capacity, increased
energy and greater self-confidence.
Are there psychological benefits?
While this work is primarily concerned with physical changes in the body, it affects the whole person. Our emotions, attitudes, belief systems
and behaviours patterns and physical body are all related. By aligning the physical structure, the individual's potential is opened and
expanded. Clients often report positive psychological changes, including greater self-confidence and ability to handle life's changes. It is
theorized that cellular memory is held in the connective tissue like frozen time capsules. When these are opened and released, that energy is
now available for more positive uses.
How often do I come for sessions?
Sessions are best done in fairly rapid succession. Weekly or twice weekly seems to work well in people's lives and gets good result. However,
there are logical breaking points. So if you need to take time off for a vacation or business trip, no problem. Just communicate with the
practitioner, so the most optimum timing can be coordinated. If you have any dental work or surgeries scheduled, communicate with your
practitioner, so that these can be taken into account. On occasion, even weekly seems to be to fast for some, so changes for your personal
needs are made as required.

What is the Rolf Method of Structural Integration?
The Rolf Method of Structural Integration is a deeply transformational bodywork experience, with lasting results. The ten session protocol systematically and scientifically "unwinds" your
connective tissue network, promoting freedom and flexibility as well as balance and alignment in the physical body. During the course of this participatory treatment program, most chronic
body pains tend to find their way out. The primary focus of Structural Integration is facilitating the relationship between gravity and the human body. A free consultation is recommended.

What kind of maintenance is required?
We find that this work continues to improve for up to six months or one year without any additional structural work. Obviously, the more you do for yourself with good eating habits,
exercise, massage, and stretching, the better. After some period of time, you may want to get a tune up. This is normally a three session series to bring you even further into balance,
flexibility and alignment.
